Japanese and European cars have stronger images than their U.S. competitors, the study of 1,000 consumers in New York, Chicago, Tampa, Oklahoma City, Los Angeles and San Francisco found. "The American consumer no longer has a clear image of what American cars stand for," said John Diefenbach, president and chief executive officer of San Francisco-based Landor Associates, the world's largest image management consultant, which conducted the poll. Consumers were asked to rate 24 of the world's best-known cars against eight image attributes: prestigious, luxurious, practical, reliable, and expensive. American cars, collectively, scored slightly higher than average in the category and significantly lower in the "sporty," "fun" and "innovative1 categories.

Only four U.S. cars made the top five in any category. Cadillac and Lincoln ranked second and third in "luxurious," and Ford and Chevrolet ranked third and fourth in "practical."
