When the shutdowns, reductions and consolidations are completed, the Pentagon said, there will be 37,800 fewer military positions and 27,000 fewer civilian jobs. Base closings have been a feature of Democratic and Republican Administration economy drives for nearly 10 years. The latest batch of actions taken by Laird follows a series of economy cuts in the size of the Army, the strength of the Navy and of the Air Force, and slashes in a number of weapons and hardware projects. Until yesterday's basereduction move, Laird had been able to muster only about $1.7 billion of this, while reducing the ranks of the armed forces by about 220,000 men. Pentagon authorities have attempted to soften the blows of base-closings on local economies by trying to bring in new industries and to find replacement jobs for dismissed civilian workers.

The 64,800 jobs to be eliminated at the 307 bases will be divided between 37,800 military personnel and 27,000 civilian employees. the Pentagon said. TENNESSEE ARTIFICIAL BREEDING ASSOC. This is possible, but on other major matters which have been considered by the board and on which closely divided opinions have been expressed (e.g., building plans, architect selection, site selection), additional meetings and more thorough studies have evolved a great consensus. Furthermore, the type of professional educator sought by the board might not accept the job if he could expect the support of only four of the seven board members.
