They were representing Shannon's father, Army Capt. James Timothy Luscinski, who was killed in the line of duty in Vietnam on Oct. 8, 1969. George Patton in World War II, told the audience about efforts to build a home on the grounds of the York VA Medical Center in Murfreesboro to house families whose veterans are in the hospital. Fundraising efforts for the Fisher House are just short $600,000 for the building, which is expected to be under construction in late spring. "We have so many veterans in Tennessee that this would serve," Lawrence said. "Nashville's VA is a Trauma 2 center, which means we have people referred here from other states as well.

The need for a Fisher House here is great." Frank Maschhoff, a senior accounting major and disabled veteran, spent 81 days in a Fisher House at Wright Patterson Air force Base in Ohio undergoing treatment for cancer. He shared his experiences about his stay with those gathered. Additionally, a special crimson maple tree was planted and dedicated to Korean Way veterans, and those who served during the conflict were asked to come shovel a little earth onto the roots of the tree. Last year, a tulip poplar was planted to honor Vietnam veterans. Following the memorial service, local veterans and their families were treated to a barbecue lunch, provided by Slick Pig, before making their way to Floyd Stadium where additional veterans events were in store.

State Sen. Douglas Henry was presented the Dr. Joe Nunley Memorial Award, recognizing the accomplishments of a man or woman who served with distinction in the military, during the pre-game activities. The award is named in honor of Joe Nunley, an MTSU author, historian, professor and former MTSU alumni relations director. He served in the U.S.

Army in World War II and died Dec. 10, 1993. "This is a very sobering experience after hearing about all of the former recipients of this award," the senator, who represents Tennessee's 21st district, said. Henry then spent his remaining minutes on the podium paying tribute to one of his best friends. "Today I think about a very good friend, John Bragg," Henry said.

"He was a master of knowledge and a master raconteur. He could tell tales and jokes and he was a serious man as well. So while I stand here in John Bragg's back yard-the university that he loved and served-I want to take my time to tell all of Murfreesboro and MTSU to remember John Bragg." Also receiving special designations, Brigadier General David Ogg (MTSU 78, '87) was inducted into the MTSU Military Science Hall of Fame. Ogg then presented the MTSU Blue Raider General Officer's Award, a military saber, to Cadet Jason Stisser. During the halftime performance by the MTSU Band of Blue, veterans and active military were invited to walk across the field and be recognized, applauded and appreciated as the hymn of each service branch was played.

A highlight of the day came as an unmanned aerial vehicle flew out of the Floyd Stadium tunnel and delivered a special centennial coin for the traditional coin toss before the start of the contest between MTSU and Arkansas State. "I'm just tickled with the way MTSU is paying tribute to its veterans, specifically those who were students, but all of us," said Jim Austin, a Navy veteran who was in the submarine service. Austin served from 1961 to 1985. "I'm glad to see these kinds of events. During Vietnam, when people came home, someone would spit in their face.

Today, people will stop a person in uniform at the airport and give them a hug. I think it's great that's where we've gotten to." Samantha E.
