I B10 THE DAILY NEWS JOURNAL FRIDAY, OCT. 8, 2010 FROM THE COVER CELEBRATE FROM PAGE B1 the Concord Baptist Association, 1810 to 2010, including its Churches and its People." The book is being printed this week at Franklin's Printing, and should ready for purchase at the association's Celebration on Oct. 18 at First Baptist Church, 200 E. Main St. in Murfreesboro.

Early beginning The association began at Smith Fork Baptist Church in Statesville (in Wilson County). "At one time, the association included all the churches in Middle Tennessee around Nashville except for Clarksville, which was in a different association," Rolater said. The Salem Association, including Cannon and Smith counties, split off in the 1820s. The Nashville association split off in 1900. And the Wilson County association formed in the 1920s.

By the middle 1920s, Concord Baptist Association included churches mostly from Rutherford County that are still a part, even today. There are 55 member churches, plus other missions sponsored by the churches. Local research Over the past six years, Rolater researched the records of the association, previous association historical publications, as well as history provided by churches. As he describes it, during the Civil War, the Union Army destroyed "every single church in the Association." David Pittman, director of missions for the Concord Baptist Association since 2002, said there are three things that hold Southern Baptists together. "One is our biblical be- "They took them over for hospitals or to house troops," he continued.

"Harpeth Baptist Church was intentionally burned by the Union Army because the Confederates used it as a hospital." That church relocated closer to town and is now Eagleville Baptist Church. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, First Baptist Church on East Main Street in Murfreesboro, was closed by creditors for about two years. "The members raised enough money to buy their church building back. That included a note, a loan," Rolater said. "They paid the loan off and held a note burning ceremony at 11 a.m.

on Dec. 7, 1941, the exact time the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor." Holding fast liefs. If you look at our core beliefs in 1810 and today, a layman would see no difference," Pittman said. The second binding element is the cooperation among churches in the association, noted. "We choose to work together voluntarily.

We also choose to be missionminded (the third unifying element)." The director of missions encourages churches to work together and the association offers training for the Lord's work. Celebration details The association celebration on Oct. 18 will begin with a meal at 5:30 p.m. After a brief annual meeting, there will be congregational singing, choir specials and testimonies in the First Baptist Church (East Main Street, Murfreesboro) sanctuary. The Rev.

There will also be a slide presentation of association history, and a dramatic presentation called "The Fifth Sunday Celebration." "The fifth Sunday meeting in the first half of the 20th Century was the big thing," Rolater said.

"Outside of First Baptist Church, the other churches met only one or two Sundays a month. All the churches would get together on the fifth Sundays during the year. There might be speaking or singing or church training then." Those attending the Oct. 18 celebration in Murfreesboro will likely enjoy some of the same events. -Doug Davis, 615-278-5152 For more photos visit Murfreeshoro Society.com BLANKENSHIP PUMPKINS We have the LARGEST selection of pumpkins in town with several different colors and varieties Small to large pumpkins Indian Corn Gourds Cornstalks and straw Maze $5 per person EVERYTHING we have for sale was raised on our farm 5646 Halls Hill Pike (Greenland Dr.
