1 1 A6 Monday, March 29, 2010 THE DAILY NEWS JOURNAL www.dnj.com STATE BRIEFLY OBITUARIES Child injured when hit by car driven by 9-year-old KNOXVILLE (AP) Tennessee police say a 6-year-old girl and her mother were hurt when they were hit by a car with a 9-year-old driver. Knoxville Police Lt. Kenny Miller told the Knoxville News-Sentinel that the accident happened at about 4:15 p.m. Saturday near the Lawson McGhee Library. Miller says 48-year-old Alisa Hall left the child alone in her 1993 Ford Taurus with the keys in the ignition when she stopped at the downtown library.

Miller says while Hall was inside the library, 37-year-old Elizabeth Silvey and her 6-year-old daughter passed the Taurus, which the child put in drive and hit the gas pedal. They were taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with injuries that didn't appear to be serious. Police notified the state Department of Children's Services about the case. No charges have been filed. Black bear monitoring victim of lack of funds KNOXVILLE (AP) For the first time in 42 years, students and faculty at the University of Tennessee won't be heading to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park this year to monitor black bears.

The long-running program to study the black bear population at the sprawling park is a victim of lack of funding. UT researchers trapped and put radio collars on female black bears in the summer and returned in the winter to track those bears to their dens to check for cubs. In recent years, trapping and collaring had been replaced by remote cameras and by the high-tech, but more expensive, technique of using DNA obtained from hair samples. The UT study cost a minimum of about $15,000 a year but needed about $30,000 to do it properly. Arrest made in triple slaying in central Tennessee home ASHLAND CITY (AP) A man has been charged with shooting and killing: a man, woman and teen in their central Tennessee home.

Cheatham County Sheriff John Holder told The Tennessean that Michael Hood has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder stemming from the slayings Saturday morning. Holder declined to release many details of the shooting, but said the adults and a 13-year-old boy were killed at the home at about 11 a.m. The names of the victims have not been released but the sheriff said they were related. Two girls in the home at the time of the slayings escaped uninjured. Holder said there was a standoff between officers and Hood.

Holder remained in jail on Sunday. Jail records did not list an attorney. Soldier waives hearing, case heads for grand jury MARYVILLE (AP) A Fort Campbell soldier arrested on a charge of sexual exploitation of a minor has waived a preliminary hearing, sending his case to the grand jury. The Maryville Daily Times reports that 27-year-old Pfc. Joseph Michael Pescetelli was being held at the Blount County Jail in lieu of $400,000 bond.

Police arrested Pescetelli on Dec. 18 after he was allegedly found in a Maryville hotel room with a 15-yearold girl. He has pleaded not guilty 1 to the charge. According to a Maryville police report from the time, the girl's mother told officers her daughter had been picked up from their residence by a taxi and when she followed it she saw her daughter enter the hotel room with an adult male. working on clearing rocks from 'The Dragon' KNOXVILLE (AP) Thrill-seeking riders who take on an 11-mile stretch of U.S. 129 known as "The Dragon" may have to be tamed for a few months. The Knoxville News-Sentinel reports that the Tennessee Department of Transportation is letting an emergency contract on Monday clean up debris from a March 14 rockslide on the twolane road, with cleanup expected to start April 5 and end by July 31. "The Dragon" is an international favorite with bikers and sport car enthusiasts because of its 318 curves and mountainside route. The rockslide, near the highway's junction with the Foothills Parkway, happened just as business from motorcycle enthusiasts and thrillseekers annually picks up.
