Nashville mayor asks for audit of crime stats OBITUARIES Nora Anderton Nora Anderton. Graveside 3 p.m., Sunday at Christ Church Memorial Gardens. Woodfin's, 893-5151 tist Church and retired from Frost-Amett after 56 years of service. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her parents, Hiram E.

Edwards, Sr. and Erlene McPeak Edwards; two husbands, Lon-nie Burlason and Tom John the same seven crimes. Serpas noted that the formula used by the FBI always has a fewer number of total crimes than his department's numbers. "I don't go back and say let's take this new lower number" he said "We take the number that we think we've counted. We don't take the FBI's number." The police department also reports crime numbers to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, which has a more advanced system that tracks even more types of crime.

The TBI's trends show that crime increased in 2005 and then declined in NASHVILLE (AP) -Nashville Mayor Karl Dean has asked for an internal audit of the city's crime statistics after a news report indicated discrepancies in trends and crime-solving rates. WTVF-TV reported that on Friday Dean asked for an analysis after the station questioned why the police department's crime trends differed from the trends reported by other agencies like the FBI and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Former Nashville police chief Ronal Serpas, who left this month to take over the troubled New Or leans police department, defended his crime reports. The police department's statistics track seven major crimes and showed that crime dropped in 2004 after Serpas arrived and continued to drop year after year. "We have been using the uniform crime report since 1963 to report the major crime rates in Nashville," Serpas told the station.

"We have not changed that" But the TV station reported that the FBI says crime went up in two of those years in 2005 and 2008 in its tracking of 2006. Then in 2008, the TBI data showed crime increasing again. During a Metro Council meeting in 2009, Serpas repeated the department's conclusion that in 2008, burglaries were flat, aggravated assaults were down, rapes were down and larcenies were down. But according to the statistics kept by both the TBI and the FBI, all those crimes increased in 2008. "Yes," Serpas answered, "but they also report fewer than we did.

So why are you immediately jumping to the conclusion that either one of us is necessarily wrong?" Patricia Barrett Patricia Barrett, age 63, May 15, 2010. Visit 2-8 p.m., today.
