ProveneffectivebyresearchersatStanfordUniversity! news MURFREESBORO Almaville may see the return of community schools in five years if 115 acres the Rutherford County Board of Education is pursuing is suitable for three campuses.

The board examined five properties Saturday and favored 115 acres on mostly flat land that's on the east side of Almaville Road and near the north side of Interstate 840. If the property has suitable soils for a step system for sewage and an underground geothermal heating and cooling system, the board hopes to buy the property with a goal to open an elementary school and middle school by 2021 while having enough land left for a yet- planned high school. "The way we're growing, we'll need it," said Wayne Blair, a school board member who attended the former Almaville School as a second- grader around 1960. The goal to buy land for athree-school complex in the Almaville area is part of the school board's five- year building plan that was updated in November, district spokesman James Evans said. He noted that government planning officials have approved about 4,500 to 5,000 lots for homes in the area, and the board hopes to buy land no later than August 2018.

Evans said the district is not identifying the owner of the land that's part of alarger property with development plans at this time while negotiations are ongoing about the price. He expects the board to discuss the purchase price and possible offer pending soil testing results during a 5 p.m. Jan. 12 meeting at the district's administration building, 2240 Southpark Drive in Murfreesboro. The depends on 141 portable classrooms to help serve nearly 44,000 children from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade attending 46 schools.

Blair said it's important for the board to buy future school land at this time before available property in this fast-growing county ends up being developed for other purposes while the price of real estate escalates. "We're growing so quickly," Blair said. "If we don't have some kind of inventory on which we can build schools as we grow, we'll get left behind. We'll have to piecemeal it." School board Vice Chairman Jim Estes agreed that land for a three-school complex is needed for an Almaville community he represents. "That area is growing," said Estes, noting that a three-school complex in Almaville that's similar to what Blackman and Siegel areas offer in Murfreesboro will benefit other communities near Almaville.

"You are not very far from Smyrna right there." The board also operates three Stewarts Creek schools on a campus in southwest Smyrna near Almaville Road between the Almaville community to the southwest and Interstate 24 to the northeast. What used to be Almaville School serves as community club and station for the Almaville Volunteer Fire Department. The old school served grades 1-8 in three rooms, Blair recalled. "The seventh and eighth grades were in the auditorium," Blair said. Contact Scott Broden at 615-278-5158.

Blair Estes Dolly star- studded Mountains Rise: A Benefit for the My People telethonhas raised nearly $9 millionso far, and donations are still being counted. response has been so overwhelming that we been able to count all of the donations yet; right now, in total, we have raised about $9 million for the folks who lost everything in Sevier Parton said in a statement.

The telethon aired Tuesday on a host of networks, including GAC, AXS-TV and RFD, and featured more than 20 live and pre-taped performances from stars ranging from Cyndi Lauper and Don McLean to Parton, Kenny Rogers, Chris Young, Chris Stapleton and Reba McEntire. Celebrities including Taylor Swift, Kenny Chesney, Stapleton, Young, Paul Simon and Dierks Bentley made significant donations to the My People Fund as did the Academy of Country Music, ACM Lifting Lives and the Country Music Association. Through My People Fund, money raised will go to benefit victims of the wildfires that ravaged parts of native Sevier County at the end of November. The My People Fund, started by Parton, The Dollywood Foundation and Sevier County businesses, ensures $1,000 a month for six months to each family who lost their primary residence in the blaze, which killed 14 people and scorched 17,000 acres in the tourist community. More than 1,300 families are known to have lost their homes.

The telethon is set to be broadcast multiple times in the coming days so the tally is expected to continue rising.
