Welch USA Today SOWETO, South Africa Thousands of South Africans came to this storied township Sunday to celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela with loud, raucous parades and festivities outside the small red brick home where as a young lawyer he organized the fight against white rule. Mandela died Thursday at age 95. Vilakazi Street in this overwhelmingly black township that is home to more than 1.2 million people became a magnet for South Africans on the official day of mourning declared by the government.

James "Murf Ward Lowe James "Murf" Ward Lowe, age 90 of Murfreesboro, TN, passed away Sunday, December 8, 2013. A native of Rutherford County, TN, he was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin E. Lowe, Sr. and Ettie Vassar Lowe; daughter, Cathy Jones; three brothers, Sewell Lowe, William A. "Bill" Lowe and Ramsey Lowe; and sister, Jewell Brandon.

'-4r5jf' Sara Vaughn "Nanny" Hale Sara Vaughn "Nanny" Hale, age 86 of Smyrna, died Saturday, December 7, 2013. She was a native of Rutherford County and was preceded in death by her parents, John Henry and Lillie Maud Toombs Vaughn, and daughters, Peggy Brown and Bonnie Hale. Mrs. Hale was owner and operator of Sara's Flowers in Smyrna and had worked in the Florist business for over 40years.

Mrs. Hale is survived hv her sons. Jimmy Hale James F. Russell, Jr. James Forgey Russell, CDR, USN, age 83, retired farmer and longtime resident of William-sport in Maury County, died Thursday, December 5, 2013.

The Maury County native was the son of the late James Forgey Russell, Sr. and Gladys Totty Russell. On December 11, 1954 he married Bettie Ann Parsons, who preceded him in death on December 13, 1994. He was a 1948 graduate of Columbia Central High School and earned his B.S. Degree in Agriculture from UT, Knoxville where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.

A veteran of the U. S. Navy, he served on the USS Everglades during the Korean War and received the National Defense Service Ribbon and Navy Occupation Medal (European Clasp). He retired from the U. S.

Naval Reserve as a Commander on August 7, 1990. The Scottish Rite 32nd degree Mason was also an Al Menah Shriner, member of Sons of Confederate Veterans, Columbia Elks Lodge, 60-year member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19, and Williamsport United Methodist Church..
